The End of an Era

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

Surly Brewing Company no longer sells Growlers. Thanks to everybody for being a regular part of our weekends. I was told today that there may be a bill written that would boost the growler limit. Call your State Representative – Go Surly Nation – Yes We Can!
Happy New Year.

16 Grit Growlers

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

A quick note about “16 Grit” , the growler only release that started with a bang yesterday.
901 growlers went out on Sat!

Kettle hopped with Warrior,Amarillo and Glacier.Dry-hopped(twice) with Glacier and Amarillo.
I find it somewhat balanced(I know eeeewwwww),caramel-oat malt flavors and huge orange lemon aroma finishing with a pithy bitterness.

Maybe Omar will let us brew it again next year?

Farewell to Growlers

Friday, December 19th, 2008

This is the final word on Growler sales for the last week of the year.
Per MN State Law (340A.301), Surly Brewing will not be able to get a license to sell growlers in 2009. In 2008, we sold over 3500 barrels of beer. The cut-off limit for getting the off-sale license is 3500 barrels. Ergo, no more growlers, no more Darkness Day, and no more SurlyFest.
We have decided to brew a beer available only via growler sales to say thanks to all the members of Surly Nation that stopped by on the weekends and purchased beer. The beer is a Double India Pale Ale. DIPAs do not age well, so don’t cellar this beer for a special occasion. Hell, this beer is a special occasion! This beer shall be named “16 Grit”, an homage to the old abrasive factory here at Surly.
Sale Dates:
December 27th – Saturday noon-4:00
December 29th – Monday 10:00-6:00
December 30th – Tuesday 10:00-6:00
December 31st – Wednesday 10:00-4:00
Price:
$17 – with an empty growler
$20 – if you do not have an empty
We have brewed 30 bbls of this beer when it’s gone, it’s gone. When we sell out, we will post the news on our web-site.
If you want your $3 deposit back on the growlers, you must return your empty growler by December 31st.
Thanks to everybody for buying growlers over the last couple years.

I am going to use the Flickr site as our new photo site. If you are a flickr user, look for “surly brewing” in the group search. The photo page on the Surly Brewing site has gotten bogged down from all the photos. You have to join the group to upload photos.
So, lets get to it. Announcing the second annual win a bottle of Darkness and Surly jacket competition! Upload your favorite Surly photo to the Flickr site. The brewing crew will pick their favorite photo after the new year. In case you are wondering, here is the winning photo from last year.
