MN Zoo and more Growlers

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

It’s the Zoo. Surly Nation has spoken! We had a party for Darkness Day volunteers last night and they decided that Surly will donate $2500 from Darkness Day to the Minnesota Zoo. Thanks to all the folks that came to Darkness Day and the volunteers that made it a great.

We have gotten a pretty positive response for our new growler-only beer, 16 Grit. It is our Double IPA we brewed just for release in growlers. Because so many people have been asking about this beer, I have decided to order 500 more growlers so we will have them available for sale at the end of December. In other words, you will not have to have an empty growler to purchase this beer.
Why the name 16 grit? It is an homage back to the old abrasive factory that was the precursor to the brewery. (See the history page for more details about that.) We would use different sized abrasive grains to differentiate the aggressiveness of the sanding discs. 16 grit is pretty abrasive, kind of like a DIPA.

Beer!

A Farewell to Growlers

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Per MN State Law (340A.301), Surly Brewing will not be able to get a license to sell growlers in 2009. In 2008, we have sold over 3500 barrels of beer. The cut-off limit for getting that off-sale license is 3500 barrels. So, no more growlers, no more Darkness Day, and no more SurlyFest.
Here is the plan for wrapping up growler sales in 2008. The last week of December we will be selling growlers of a new beer we brewed specifically for this farewell to growlers. The beer is a DIPA – double IPA. We do not have enough growlers left for you to purchase, so we came up with a new idea.
Bring in your empty growler and we will clean it and then fill your growler directly from the brite beer tank in the back. We will be selling these growlers for $17 each and here are the hours we will be filling:

December 27th – Saturday noon-4:00
December 29th – Monday 10:00-6:00
December 30th – Tuesay 10:00-6:00
December 31st – Wednsday 10:00-4:00
We have brewed 30 bbls of this beer. If we run out, we will not have any more to sell.

-All growlers must be returned by December 31st if you wish to get your $3 deposit back.

Packers lose and Wisconsin GETS SURLY!

Friday, November 7th, 2008

Ok folks, here is the deal. I have been having a running bet going with some Sconnies for awhile. The original deal was, Surly will sell beer in Wisconsin when Favre retired. Farve then retired and I got the calls to starting trucking in the beer. Well… I did not believe for one minute that he would actually retire, and guess what, he didn’t.
So let us make the a new bet. We will start sending beer into wisconsin if the Vikes beat the Packers this weekend. So all you Packer fans looking to GET SURLY can root against your green and gold this weekend.
Here are the details (I’m putting this out there cause I know that AP will be running roughshod)

Paddy Ryans – November 19th in Hudson.
Bender on tap and Darkness tapping at 7:00. Omar and Todd will be hanging about and fielding your questions.
After that, you will be able to find Surly on draft in the Western part of the state – Hudson and Eau Claire areas. NO CANS, so do not bother asking.

Congrats!

Surly Ultimate has just won the National Championship in the Masters Division of the UPA in Sarasota Florida! I wish I could have been down there, winning the title with the boys, but things did not work out this year. Employee #3, Jim Mott, first asked me about working at the brewery during our Surly Ultimate end of the year party in 2006. He’s been on board ever since. I’m glad I could help out by delivering this week so Jim could represent the brewery!

Playing ultimate Frisbee has been a big part of my life since I picked it up at Macalester College. Most of the friends I have today I met through playing Ultimate. I also met my wife Becca, playing ultimate back in 1999. Traveling around the country playing in Ultimate tournaments definetly exposed me to great beers around American and got my beer mojo going. There are so many stories to tell with a lot of great people that just won that tournament. Russ Adams – exposing me to the West Coast beer scene while having the best Ultimate week ever. Randy Gage and Grady Hanna, both Mac grads that I have spent many a weekend with. Jeremy Alden and Seth G, a couple guys that started out on Trash Ultimate, back in the early 90s. Marty Bakko, a great guy that has been beating me since I was 19, a world champ, and now a national champ. All the Carelton boys on the team, nice running! Rydel and Enge, 2 guys I’ve really gotten to know well since playing Masters.

Congrats guys, see you at the team party, this year’s should be a blowout!image
